So apparently CNN has chosen to reboradcast its coverage of the events of September 11th all day that day to commemorate the 5th anniversary since. Does this sound... wrong to you? Everyone is jumping on this bandwagon now--what started with the release of 'United 93' back in May culminates with the History Channel, CBS, NBC, FOX, a new film with Nic Cage and even Spike TV getting in on it. Supposedly, that cork popped and it was found to be socially acceptable to start creating dramatized accounts of that day's events. And now we're forced to relive that horrible day through a news rebroadcast? Why must we keep treating September 11th like it's deserving of commercial liscensure--and better yet, why can't we shut up about it? The resulting events were not mirrored in London after the subway bombing not too long ago. They moved on--and demonstrated what mettle their own nation was made of by grieving on an ultrapersonal level and continuing to function exactly as before.

Today was the only day in memory where I was so tired, I curled up in the backseat of my car and slept for forty minutes between classes. It got warm in there toward the end. Otherwise, not so bad.

I love how Eric Clapton's style has evolved with his age. He's probably the only artist I can think of who hasn't tried to remain eternally in his 30s and has instead embraced the change.

![]() I watched the most interesting documentary a week or so ago, and it's made such an impact on me I'm still thinking about it. So I must share. It's called 'One Day In September' and it conerns the ill-fated 1972 Munich Olympics. I knew a little bit about it (something about Israelis and Palestinians, blah blah blah...), but I had no idea it got this bad. Things were not looking good from the very start--Munich, desperate to wash the taste of the 1930-something Olympics out of the world's mouth, gave off this "We're a cooler, lax, forward-thikning Germany!" vibe. Security was almost nonexistant--patrol guards were unarmed teenagers. Enter a Palestinian terrorist group calling themselves Black September (the still above is actually quite famous--it was taken just outside the Israeli athlete compound). After shooting one or two, they held the Israeli Olympic team hostage, demanding the global release of over 200 Palestinian prisoners-of-war. Amidst all this violence, the Games were still going on, and athletes were sunning themselves in a courtyard not 100 feet away from where it was taking place. I was astounded--no one took this seriously. After coming to an agreement through their "spokesperson", Issa, the group conceeded that their demands would not be met and instead demanded a plane to head for Cairo. So they rounded up the athletes (minus the two they'd killed by then) and boarded a bus--they would later board several helicopters. Up until this point, government officials thought they were dealing with four terrorists, max. When they counted eight, they knew they were in trouble. Meanwhile, an ambush has been set up in the airport--several snipers located at various places and a group of agents dressed as flight crew aboard the airplane. Minutes prior to the terrorists' and athletes' arrivals, the "flight crew" decides this is a suicide mission and calls it off. They disembarked and failed to tell anyone. No one has communicated to the snipers that there are actually eight terrorists, not four, and they are still uncertain as to how to identify them (the terorists were in track suits, but so were the athletes). After arrival, Black September realizes they've been tricked, and gunfire starts. One sniper is mistaken for a terrorist and gets shot in the head (the snipers didn't have any form of radio contact). Finally, a bomb goes off in the helicopter and all is quiet after an hour and a half. Initial press releases said "All the terrorists are dead and all the athletes are alive". About an hour later, this statement was made: "Our worst fears have been realized tonight. They've now said that there were 11 hostages; 2 were killed in their rooms yesterday morning, 9 were killed at the airport tonight. They're all gone." Go rent it. It's amazing. |
